MAST Academy has reached an exciting milestone with the launch of its first campus-based training. Recently, the first cohort of students came together to begin A Taste of Marine Trades, a hands-on introduction to the marine industries.
Led by Tyler Taua-Gordon of Te Kawerau Iwi Tiaki Trust, the day began with a karakia whakawātea (blessing ceremony). Tyler shared connections between the whenua, the people and the environment, while also offering guidance for a safe and enriching journey ahead for our new students.
While work-based apprenticeships and MAST’s school-to-work programmes remain at the heart of what we do, this new campus training offers an additional career entry point and pathway for those entering the marine and composite trades.
“With solid industry support, pre-trade training at MAST is more than just a pathway to employment – it will equip students with the skills and confidence to step into apprenticeships and build successful careers,” says Tommy Honey, MAST Academy Board Chair. “At the same time, it provides industry with motivated, work-ready candidates. Investing in campus-based pre-trade training is an essential part of future-proofing the industry,” he adds.
MAST’s campus tutor, Warren Jones, brings extensive experience from his years at Southern Spars. In the first few weeks, he has been impressed by the students’ enthusiasm. “Their curiosity and willingness to ask questions show they’re actively engaging with the material and thinking critically,” says Warren.
“The workshop has a true industry feel, with dedicated stations for hands-on learning. The break-out classrooms provide a space for students to focus on bookwork, ask burning questions and connect practical skills – materials, tools and techniques – to the bigger picture,” adds Warren. The 12-week A Taste of Marine Trades programme runs at various times throughout the year, with the next intake set for late April. A key feature is industry engagement, offering students the opportunity to visit marine workplaces while providing industry a chance to meet the talent.
